LOWBOY. TYPES, CHARACTERISTICS, USES AND SAFETY.

lowboy

We provide you with all the relevant information about lowboys, including their definition, characteristics, types, safety features, and uses of these trailers that are so useful for our trailers.

WHAT IS A LOWBOY?

A lowboy or low bed refers to a type of low-platform trailer that is towed by a tractor-trailer and is best suited for all types of heavy loadsandlarge materials.

Lowboysare a less common type of trailer and are more expensive to use . They make more sense for larger loads. Loads can be driven directly onto the lowboy.

The first low platform was used in 1920. This type of trailer is suitable for heavy and large loads .

FLAT PLATFORM

One of the features that differentiates one platform from another is the height of each platform. Unlike a standard flatbed, which is a uniform height of 60 to 62 inches throughout , a lowboy or low bed has two higher sectionswith a lower middle area.

CHARACTERISTICS OF A LOWBOY

  • One of the features that setslowboy trailers apart is theheight of the trailer bed. Unlike a standard flatbed, which has a uniform height of 60 to 62 inches, a lowboy has two upper sections, along with a mid-low section.
The middle section of a lowboy can only be 22 to 24 inches high.
  • Most lowboy trailers have a hydraulic system that operates a hydraulic piston that lifts the trailer to engage the towing unit after it has been loaded.
  • All lowboysare towed by a truck.
  • They all have air brakes.
  • There are 2-axle trailers with 8 tires, large trailers have 3 axles with 12 tires; there are also some special heavy-duty trailers with 4 axles, and there are even large-volume trailers with more than 4 axles.
  • They have a large load capacity, supporting from 10 tons to 100 tons.
  • On some lowboy trailers , the gooseneck has a turning radius to accommodate a dual-screw tractor.
  • The main frame of the trailer is constructed from high tensile material, which is up to 38% stronger than steel in other trailers.

TYPES OF LOWBOY TRAILERS

There are several types of lowboy trailers. The three main types are:

  • Fixed gooseneck lowboy
  • Lowboy fixed collar
  • Lowboy detachable collar

Fixed gooseneck lowboys are easy to load from the rear thanks to the folding platforms. The gooseneck itself can be repositioned to keep the bed elements in place.

Fixed-neck lowboys are attached to the trailer. This makes them a lightweight option. The "fixed" style means that they can be difficult to load from the front.

Detachable gooseneck lowboys, or detachable lowboys, are useful when your equipment needs to be pushed or pulled onto the trailer deck. You can also load heavy items from above if necessary.

Essentially, you can choose to use a lowboy with a removable neckwhen your equipment can be driven onto the truck. If a crane from another piece of equipment is required to load it, then you can choose the other options.

HYDRAULIC AND MECHANICAL DEMOUNTABLE LOWBOYS

There are two types of these removable lowboys :

  • Hydraulic detachable goosenecks
  • Mechanically detachable goosenecks.

Hydraulic detachable goosenecks usehydraulic cylinders to adjust height and detach. The hydraulic system may require additional maintenance.

Lowboyscan move equipment and machinery up to almost 4 meters high. A standard 2-axle lowboy can carry 18 tons. If you increase the number of axles, you can increase the weight limit.

Unlike standard flatbed trailers, lowboys have a two-level drop system. This means that there are two drops in the height of the flatbed, with the rear of the trailer above the pit but lower than the front.

WHAT ARE THE USES OF A LOWBOY TRAILER?

A lowboy trailer is a type of specialized transport platform. It differs from anormal flatbed trailer in that it is low and close to the ground, allowing for loads that are too high for a standard flatbed.

They are very useful for transporting machinery and equipment. Semi-trailers with double-deck systems and drop decks are particularly useful. Drop-side trailers allow large items to be loaded and unloaded with ease.

The most common types of lowboy trucks and trailers involve some special equipment. In most cases, a three-axle semi-truck is used to transport a lowboy.

The middle section of a lowboy can be as low as 22 to 24 inches in height. This type of lowbed trailer can carry shipments up to 12 feet (3.66 m)and is best suited for heavy and oversized loads.

The use of a standard flatbed trailer is for heavier loads, which may require special permits, potentially causing delays and requiring additional safety precautions.

As you can see, lowboy or low-bed trailers are used to transport heavy equipment such as excavators, industrial equipment, etc., but for smaller and lighter loads, a flatbed traileris more cost-effective.

SAFETY MEASURES FOR THE USE OF LOWBOYS

  1. Always park the low-bed trailerand truck on level ground when loading or unloading the trailer.
  2. Be careful when loading or unloading the equipment.
  3. Inspect all equipment before operating it and avoid accidents.
  4. High-strength chains are best for securing and fastening cargo on a low-bed trailer.

Wondering what a tractor-trailer with a lowboy trailer is used for ? A lowboy trailer is specialized transport equipment . If you are moving large equipment, a tractor-trailer with a lowboy trailermay be just what you need.

This type of heavy transport equipment is one of the most versatile pieces of equipment on the road and can be used to ship a wide variety of equipment and much more.

What are lowboy trailers used for? A lowboy tractor-trailercan be used to transport all types of heavy and oversized loads.

Most of the time, a lowboy is used to transport machinery and equipment. Large construction equipment, such as bulldozers and excavators, travel to job sites on lowboy trailers.

      Good morning, Gissel,
The height of a loaded low bed may vary depending on the design and manufacturer's specifications.

The height of a loaded low bed will depend on factors such as the type of suspension, load capacity, and specific trailer configuration. In general, a loaded low bed tends to be lower to the ground to facilitate the transport of tall and heavy loads.

For accurate information on the height of a loaded low bed in a particular case, I would recommend consulting the technical specifications provided by the trailer manufacturer or contacting your dealer for specific details on the model you are considering.

      Best regards

Hello, I am in charge of an industrial warehouse project where the use of LOWBOYs is planned, but the client wants to bring some of the LOWBOYs inside the warehouse, which is on a platform 1.20 m higher than the outside floor, so a ramp needs to be designed. In this regard, we are looking to review LOWBOYs that require the lowest possible ramp slope for space reasons. The machinery being transported weighs 50 tons. What slope, length, and width of ramp do the trucks you operate generally require?

Good evening, the detachable neck is hinged, meaning it has a pendulum motion. We purchased one, and I don't feel that it is being used properly because they operate it as if the neck were rigid. I don't know if it's possible that the salt air during transport by sea has rusted its moving parts, making it difficult to attach to the sole. We have to keep trying to fit it. Let's see if someone can help me.

    • Vanessa C. Reply

Good morning, Alexander, thank you for your comment.
This could be due to several factors:
      1. Saltpeter corrosion: Check all moving parts and joints for signs of rust or corrosion. If you find rust, you can try applying a penetrating lubricant or rust cleaner. In more severe cases, you may need to disassemble the affected parts to clean and restore them.
      2. Lack of maintenance and lubrication: Ensure that all moving parts are well lubricated. Use a lubricant suitable for heavy machinery that is exposed to wet or salty conditions.
      3. Incorrect adjustment or improper assembly: Check the user manual to confirm that the flip-up collar has been assembled correctly. Ensure that there are no misaligned or poorly assembled parts that could be hindering operation.
      4. Damaged during transport: You must visually inspect all parts of the equipment for deformations or damaged parts that could be blocking movement.

We hope we have been of assistance. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are at your service.
