If the data plate on your forklift says that its rated capacity is 10,000 pounds, that does not necessarily mean that it can lift any load weighing less than 10,000 pounds.
The dimensions of the load, its location, the distribution of the load's weight, and any accessories on the forklift will affect its true maximum capacity.
Understanding the load capacity of a forklift
Load capacity, rated capacity, and net capacity describe the maximum weight that a forklift can safely lift at a specific load center. If the load is not centered, the forklift cannot lift to its maximum capacity.
What is a load center?
A load center is the horizontal distance from the vertical face of the forks to the center of gravity of the load. As a general rule, the load center is 24″ from the face of the forks (the center point of a standard 48″ x 48″ pallet).
Understanding the rated capacity of a forklift
Forklift capacities range from approximately 3,000 to over 70,000 lbs. You can find the rated capacity of a forklift on its data plate.
According to the American agency OSHA, " loads must only be handled within the rated capacity of a truck." One might think that the rated capacity is the same as the maximum capacity, but this is not the case.
The basic load capacity of a forklift is based on its model.
According to the sample data plate, this machine will have an actual rated capacity of 4,950 pounds at a 24-inch load center ( 48 inches total), or 4,400 pounds at a 30-inch load center ( 60 inches total) at full height.
The reduced capacity takes into account the maximum height of the fork, the side shift, and any attachments being used on the forklift.
The length of the load dictates where the center of gravity is. When using a forklift with multiple attachments, you must also have multiple data plates to note the rating with each attachment.
Another factor that affects the load capacity of a forklift is the distribution on the pallet. If the load has an unusual shape and is heavier at one end, the center of gravity shifts toward the heavier end. This altered center of gravity must also be taken into account.
Forklift capacity and accessories
Adding a forklift attachment reduces the lift capacity of the forklift due to the additional weight of the attachment itself and because an attachment generally moves the truck's load center further forward.
As the center of gravity moves forward, the maximum weight of the load must decrease to prevent tipping.

The net capacity of a forklift is what tells us the true capacity and takes into account accessories, the type of forklift mast, and any other modifications.
Net load capacity is also known as payload capacity.
How much does a forklift weigh?
The weight of a forklift varies depending on the type of forklift and its load capacity. For example, a 2.5-ton forklift can weigh approximately 3.6 tons. A 4-ton forklift can weigh approximately 6 tons. A 4.5- to 5-ton forklift can weigh between 6 and 7 tons, respectively.
